ProposalDescription:

PGS Heritage (Pty) Ltd has been appointed by Scaw South Africa (Pty) Ltd to effect the relocation of forty-six (46) graves located in an informal cemetery on Erf 634, Junction Hill Extension 2 Township, Registration Division IR, close to Dinwiddie, Gauteng Province.

Expanded_Motivation:

The graves will be adversely affected by the construction of a waste disposal site for Scaw Metals. The approximately forty-six (46) graves are situated in the local informal burial ground; situated to the south of Germiston city center and to the east of Alberton city center in the Dinwiddie area and are located at the following coordinates: • -26.281806°; 28.165750°; • -26.281778°; 28.165861°; • -26.281500°; 28.165778°; • -26.281528 °; 28.165639°. Mosaic Funeral Group will be responsible for the handling and reburial of the exhumed human remains. The process of stakeholder engagement commenced in November 2018. Bilingual (Setswana and English) site notices were erected on the 05th of November 2018 and newspaper notices were published in the Daily Sun on the 19th of November 2018 and in the Germiston City News on the 23rd of November 2018. Because of the stakeholder engagement process, one grave have been positively identified by the affected family and a signed request form for the relocation of the grave has been provided by them. For their 1 grave the date of death is known, 23 March 1944, and therefore older than 60 years old as stipulated in the Heritage Act. The age of the other 45 graves is unidentifiable and will be regarded as being older than 60 years since the informal burial ground could not have been in use since 1960 from the information obtained during the stakeholder engagement.
