ProposalDescription:

PGS Heritage (Pty) Ltd and Avbob Funeral Service Ltd – Vryheid Branch has been appointed by Ikwezi Mine to assist with the relocation of seven (7) Unknown graves located on the remaining extent of the Farm Kliprand 8627 HT that will be affected by mining in the area mentioned above. The seven graves will be relocated to an area identified on the remainder of Kliprand Farm 8627 HT, Dannhauser Local Municipality, Amajuba District Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal Province.

Expanded_Motivation:

The graves are located in informal areas on the farm Kliprand 8627 HT and will be affected by future mining activities: • Grave No. 55: Unknown grave at GPS Coordinates -27.87776⁰; 30.12457⁰, • Grave No. 56: Unknown grave at GPS Coordiantes -27.87609⁰; 30.12145⁰ • Grave No. 57: Unknown grave at GPS Coordinates -27.87552⁰; 30.12140⁰, • Grave No. 60: Unknown grave at GPS Coordinates -27.87182⁰; 30.12544⁰, • Grave No. 63: Unknown grave at GPS Coordinates -27.87034⁰; 30.12532⁰, • Grave No. 65: Unknown grave at GPS Coordinates -27.87131⁰; 30.12236⁰, • Grave No. 66: Unknown grave at GPS Coordinates -27.87725⁰; 30.12145⁰, Some graves in this area has been documented as being more than 60 years while most has been buried in the 1980’s to 1990’s. However, various methods have been implemented to locate the next-of-kin of these graves without success. A visual investigation of the graves were done and it was noted that the graves are not looked after or visited. Given the above information the seven unknown graves are considered to being older than 60 years and therefore falls under the regulations of the National Heritage Resources Act (Act 25 of 1999). This application request a permit of relocation inside the parameters of the KwaZulu Natal Amafa and Research Institute Act (Act 05 of 2019). Ikwezi Mine attempted to identify and discuss the relocation of the graves with the next-of-kin but no family could be located. The following steps were undertaken in addition to the standard social consultation requirements: • Radio broadcast on the Newcastle Community Radio for 14 days from 15 May 2019 to 30 May 2019. • Consultation with the Dannhauser Flats Landowners’ Association and the Emalangeni KwaNkosi Traditional Council. • Consultation with the office of the Magistrate of Dannhauser: Kwa-Zulu Natal. Based on the information this application is for the exhumation and reburial of seven unknown graves on the farm Kliprand 8627 HT.
