ProposalDescription:

Mammalian fossils currently eroding out from sandy clays in the intertertidal zone along the eastern shore of Saldanha Bay are currently being lost to science. It is intended to remove the partially exposed fossils but not to excavate blindly for further material. They will be archived at the Iziko Museum and used as one of several proxies to recreate the palaeoenvironmental setting.

Expanded_Motivation:

Mammalian fossils currently eroding out due to wave action from sandy clays in the intertertidal zone along the eastern shore of Saldanha Bay are currently being lost to science. It is intended to remove the partially exposed fossils but not to excavate blindly for further material to avoid any damage to the intertidal zone. They will be archived at the Iziko Museum and used as one of several proxies to recreate the regional palaeoenvironmental setting. The geological profile indicates several unconformities suggesting that the site will provide detailed information on Pleistocene sea levels. The site has been previously excavated but no chronology for the site exists, thus limiting the value of the previously excavated fossils and my research group intends to conduct a dating program including OSL (Andy Carr, Universty og Leicetershire) to place these and subsequently excavated material in a proper temporal setting. Organic clays are also associated with the fossils and it is intended to sample these for palynology (Lynne Quick, UCT), whIch will complement the faunas (newly acquired material to be studied by Deano Stynder UCT).
