RESCUE EXCAVATIONS OF AN EXPOSED HUMAN BURIAL IN BRAKFONTEIN

Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

An exposed, originally stone-packed burial, was identified eroding out of the bank of a non-perennial stream on the Farm Brakfontein 175 (locally referred to as Deel Kraal), near Somerset East, Eastern Cape Province. The site is located about 24 km south (as the crow flies) from the town of Somerset East.

Expanded_Motivation:

It is highly likely that future rain and erosion will expose the burial further over time resulting in the skeletal remains being washed into and down the river. There is also the human and animal impact of the risk that skeletal remains may be disturbed and / or removed. It is therefore, recommended that rescue excavations be conducted to ensure the safety and conservation of the skeletal remains. Further studies will be conducted to identify the individual, e.g., determination of age, sex, ethnicity and possible dating of the skeletal remains. The long-term intention would be to rebury the individual within the same area nearby the other stone-packed burial. These arrangements will be made once the rescued skeletal remains will be cleaned, assessed, and analysed.
