Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

Rescue Permit application for the exhumation and relocation of possibly one grave on the Farm Uitvalgrond 416, near Brits, North West Province.

Expanded_Motivation:

This rescue permit is to exhume and relocate the partially exposed remains of one grave on the farm Uitvalgrond 416. The remains were accidentally exposed during the construction of a holding dam from the Hartebees Canal for farming activities. The dam was constructed by a farmer leasing the property from Lonmin. PGS Heritage was contacted after the police investigated the remains and concluded that it is a historic burial and does not need a forensic investigation. Some of the remains were removed by the SAPS for analyses and will be reburied with the rest of the remains after exhumation. Retrospective stakeholder engagement will be done to endeavour to identify the next-of-kin of the affected grave, This will include site and newspaper notices as well as visits to the communities in the area, if feasible. Although only one set of human remains were uncovered, the possibility exists that more burials might be discovered during the rescue excavation.
