ProposalDescription:

The exhumation is 40 graves but this application is for relocation of 2 graves that are older than 60 years and fall under the jurisdiction of SAHRA. The burial site is threatened by South 32 Goedehoop mining activities. Affected families and stakeholders have been duly consulted and permission has been granted to proceed with the application for relocation of the affected graves. The affected graves are located at South 32 Sterkwater 317 JS Goedehoop Section in Steve Tshwete Local Municipality of Mpumalanga Province.

Expanded_Motivation:

The 2 affected graves are part of a bigger site with other graves younger than 60 years. A Burial Permit to relocate graves younger than 60 years has been obtained. Apparently these graves belong to the same families, the families want all graves to be relocated at the same time to allow them to conduct rituals and other family traditional rites at the same time. The affected graves are directly under threat from the mine expansion, they can not be preserved in situ. In addition even if they were to preserved in situ, affected families would struggle to get access to the site. The graves must be relocated in accordance with DMR regulation no graves must within the 500m blasting area. Furthermore the affected families have been relocated to far away location in KwaMhlanga, Monstrelus, Hammanskral and Witbank. It has always been their wish to take their family graves to nearby cemeteries were they can access without restrictions like mining areas. They confirmed that they are also afraid that their family graves may disappear without their knowledge. As such the affected families have consented to the relocation of their family graves (see attached agreements)
