ProposalDescription:

Application for temporary export of specimen BP-1-9049 for temporary export to American Museum of Natural History for specimen study.

Expanded_Motivation:

This application requests permission to export BP-1-9049, a small mammaliamorph jaw from the Triassic-Jurassic boundary for specimen preparation and study. The specimen was collected in the Qhemegha area in the May 2023 field season. The jaw is extremely small and delicate, and the block must be reduced before it can be CT-scanned. The American Museum has a specialized facility with a geological wire saw that has precision control and narrow kerf width. Using this saw, the block will be incrementally reduced and CT scanned until the specimen is isolated. At this time, it will be studied by Prof Roger Benson and Meng Jin (AMNH) as part of collaborative work through the Wits Evolutionary Studies Institute with Professor Jonah Choiniere. The WIts ESI lacks comparable equipment and taxonomic expertise to conduct the study in-house. We request a 2-year export period to complete this work.
