Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

Application is a request for temporary export, from 1-30 April 2015, to enable specimens to be analysed in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA. Here, they will undergo carbon isotope analysis of tooth enamel, using a laser sampling device. This equipment is not available in South Africa. Laser sampling will minimise damage to these valuable specimens.

Expanded_Motivation:

Carbon isotope analysis of these fossil teeth will help to answer the many unresolved questions about the role of marine foods in the emergence and lifeways of early modern humans. Post-depositional alterations to archaeological deposits make it difficult or impossible to answer these questions definitively on the basis of excavated food residues. Since marine and terrestrial foods have different 13C/12C ratios, analysis of human teeth will provide a direct measure of the importance of marine foods in the diet. This work builds on a large body of similar research carried out by the applicant on Later Stone Age communities. This is the first attempt to extend the time range back to the Middle and Late Pleistocene. Please note that Iziko Museums of South Africa, as the curating institution, Heritage Western Cape and the Eastern Cape Provincial Heritage Authority have all approved this application. Permits for destructive analysis from HWC and ECPHRA are uploaded under 'Consent letters'. Specimens will be hand-carried by applicant to and from the USA, and applicant will be present throughout the analysis.
