Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

Launch for the new version of SAHRIS occurred on Monday the 30th of October 2023.

Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

During the 2015 and 2016 field seasons at Sibudu our team recovered two teeth and a small fragment of a tooth from the Howiesons Poort and "Pre-Still Bay" deposits. By exporting the three teeth/fragment we wish to work with colleagues in the Paleoanthropology team in Tübingen to determine if the dental remains are human. The better preserved teeth are very heavily worn, making identification by simple visual inspection and metric analyses of its outer shape difficult. For these teeth, as well as the small fragment, we hope that additional studies of their internal structures (e.g. enamel-dentine junction) may allow them to be identified. With the proposed export we thus expect to identify whether the teeth belong to MSA modern humans and, if so, how they are related phylogenetically to other fossil hominins in the MSA of southern Africa and beyond. Non-destructive abrasions studies may provide insight into the diet of these MSA people.

Expanded_Motivation:

In order to identify the three objects as potential human teeth and their phylogenetic relationship to other fossil hominin remains, we will perform non-destructive, high-resolution micro-CT scans and analyses of the outer shapes. Since the tooth crowns are heavily worn and much of the external characteristics obliterated, we will also need to perform analyses of the internal dental structures (e.g. enamel-dentine junction) via non-destructive, high-resolution Computer Tomographic scanning. These virtual models will be analyzed by the methods of geometric morphometrics and multivariate statistics. Comparative analyses with large human and primate collections will be necessary to identify the teeth as human. The work will also include studies of micro-striations to exam past diets and micro-CT studies to facilitate non-destructive studies with virtual methods. The resulting virtual models of the teeth will enable future studies and be a valuable resource for the KZNM in the event the finds are ever lost, or if they should be spared from non-essential handling. We will provide the KZNM the data from the planned studies for their archives
