Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

Following comments received on the proposed Revised Schedule of Fees for applications made to the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA), made in terms of Section 25(2)(l) of the National Heritage Resources Act No. 25 of 1999 (NHRA) and published in the Government Gazette of 22 July 2022, SAHRA hereby publishes the final Revised Schedule of Fees for Applications made to SAHRA. Applications for provision of services submitted to the South African Heritage Resources Authority (SAHRA), in terms of the National Heritage Resources Act, No. 25 of 1999 (NHRA) must be accompanied by a payment of the appropriate fee, taking effect from 1 January 2023

Reach Archaeology Consulting Ltd has been appointed by Mizmor23 Granite Pty Ltd (Rustenburg Quarry) to conduct a Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey and supporting Test Excavations to identify the correct location of the possible burial ground. The possible graves are located on an existing granite quarry on the remainder of portion 5 of the farm Schaapkraal 292JQ, District of Rustenburg, North-West Province, South Africa.

Expanded_Motivation: 

GPR survey and test excavations confirmatory processes are to verify any sub-surface anomalies that are consitent with the presence of a heritage resource, the supporting test excavation or testing will be conducted to confirm if the sub-surface anomaly is a heritage resource are human remains, graves or burial ground to be accompanied by the supporting full-scale Phase II mitigation process. This survey is to ensure that work done at the locality that might possibly contain a grave be appropriately mitigated. The test excavation and GPR survey will assist in the identification and verification of the locality of a possible disturbed and adversely affected burial ground. The process of gravel identification, verification and confirmation are to be conducted to address the validity of claims by the Schaapkraal community of 10 possible family graves that have been disturbed by quarry activities on an existing granite quarry.
