ProposalDescription:

PGS Heritage (Pty) Ltd has been appointed by Ivanplats (Pty) Ltd to conduct test excavations of two areas where community members indicated and pointed out the graves of initiation burials which are located on the farm Rietfontein 2 KS, close to Mokopane in the Limpopo Province.

Expanded_Motivation:

A site visit/survey of the Magongoa area with mine officials and community representatives was conducted on 7 Augustus 2018. Two areas were indicated to contain the burial grounds/graves of initiates from the 1960's. No surface features/dressings could be identified to indicate the burials in these areas: • 1969 burial ground: Contains approximately 18 – 27 graves located in an area at GPS Coordinates: S 24.06398⁰; E 029.01919⁰. • 1963 grave: Contains one grave in an area at GPS Coordinates: S 24.06206⁰; E 029.02094⁰ The community members indicated these areas for test excavations to be conducted to confirm the presence of graves. The initiates proposed to be buried here are all approximately 14 years old, if evidence of a grave pit is identified a full grave relocation process will take place. These areas will be affected by the future mining activities and fall within the footprint of the proposed TFS construction.
