Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

PGS Heritage (Pty) Ltd has been appointed by Northern Coal (Pty) Ltd to conduct test excavations of approximately 17 stone features on portion 16 of the farm Weltevreden 381 JT, near Belfast, Mpumalanga Province.

Expanded_Motivation:

A site visit/survey was conducted on 22 October 2018 to inspect the area. The features might be remnants of stone by field clearance of the mealie fields they are located next to, however, there is some concern from the community that they might be graves. The features are scattered in no specific pattern as one would expect in a cemetery, the sizes and orientation of the features are not consistent, and no grave goods were noted on the features as one would expect if it were graves. Test excavations will be conducted to confirm or eliminate the possibility of graves. In the unlikely event that the features turn out to be graves a full grave relocation process will be followed.
