ProposalDescription:

PGS Heritage (Pty) Ltd has been appointed by Bakwena Platinum Corridor Concessionaire (Pty) Ltd to conduct test excavations with the purpose to ascertain the presence of human remains. Three sets of human remains are said to be located in the area to be investigated. The site is located in the road reserve on the northern side of the N4 at S25.681706⁰ & E27.798634⁰, 1.48km east of the R512 overpass, near Brits in the North West Province.

Expanded_Motivation:

The widening of the carriageway is currently underway and according to the next-of kin of one of the three graves, it has been damaged and/or disturbed by the construction activities. Following consultation with the contractor, SAHRA, Bakwena, the next-of-kin and representatives of the Department of Environmental Affairs on 5 July 2019, the decision was made that test excavations should be undertaken to establish the exact location of the graves. The next-of-kin indicated an area measuring roughly 20m x 30m that needs to be investigated. No surface features that might indicate the location of the graves are visible. Should any human remains be uncovered, it would be left undisturbed and a grave relocation process would be undertaken as per the relevant legislation.
