ProposalDescription:

On 22 October 2018 at 14H00, SAHRA was alerted via a phone call by the Park Manager P. Haarhoff of the removal of railway tracks within the declared boundaries of the West Coast Fossil Park National Heritage Site. A subsequent email explained the background: "On the 12th October 2018 two gentlemen representing “White City Community Projects” informed me that they were on site to remove the railway line in the Fossil Park. I explained to them that the said line is the property of the Fossil Park and that they were not entitled to remove it. They were under the impression that they have permission from Public Works Dept to remove the line. This morning they came to inform me that they had started to remove the line. We called the police and had a brief meeting with them, together with the police, to try to get some clarity on the matter. They have a map of the Park which they got from Saldanha Bay Municipality which they think indicates that part of the line is not in the Park. They would not allow us to copy this plan nor would they give us copies of any of the documentation they have from the Public Works Dept. They gave me the name and number of their contact in Public Works to phone (see details below). When I ring this number it goes onto a fax line so I have not succeeded in talking to Public Works as yet. I showed them a copy of the attached diagram showing the co-ordinates of the Fossil Park and explained that this is a National Heritage Site and that we would be referring the matter to our Attorneys." SAHRA phoned the Department of Public Works (Nomalanga Kani), the White City Sports and Activity Centre and Saldanha Municipality (Rasheed Nackerdeen) and found out that there are no ongoing projects regarding such removal. SAHRA advised the WCFP Managing Authority to open a case with the police constable who had already been involved the previous day when the removal was discovered.
