Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

Late Iron Age Stone Walled Sites impacted upon by the Eskom Tubatse Switching Station (now known as Manogeng Switching Station) located on Portion 1 of Steynsdrift 145 JS, Limpopo Province

Expanded_Motivation:

Eskom has recently commenced with the construction of a switching station near Roossenekal in the Limpopo Province. Eskom was previously issued with a destruction permit as well as an excavation permit: Excavation permit Case ID2920 Valid from 20/08/2013 - 31/08/2014 Destruction permit Case ID2920 Valid from 25/03/2014 - 30/04/2015 (attached to this application) These permits were needed during the geotechnical studies which were to be undertaken on site. Some of the features permitted were destroyed at the time, but not all of it. When the construction team arrived on site during 2017, they discovered some features still on site. A heritage specialist, Henk Steyn (report attached) visited the site and compiled a report with recommendations. This report is attached. His recommendations were the following: That an application be made for the destruction permit to be renewed; • Once issued, that a heritage specialist be present when the structures are destroyed, especially the large, elongated stone structure situated at MSS1 (25.107736 & 29.826620). • In the small chance that the structure at MM1 turns out to be a grave, a full grave relocation process will have to be initiated. This application is therefore for the renewal of the destruction permit.
