ProposalDescription:

On the 28th of May 2021, the HPU received a complaint that was addressed to the DMRE, and then forwarded to SAHRA's HPU.

Expanded_Motivation:

On the 10th of June 2021, the HPU had a meeting with Two Rivers Mine, Mokabane Family, and the Department of Mineral Resources. In the meeting it was stated that the complainants used to live there before they moved. They used to bury their loved one’s in the back yards of their homesteads, and when they left, they left the graves as is. The family stated that the graves are older than 60 years as the Grandad was born in 1818. The mine has given compensation to the families and build houses for them in 2007. The Mokabane family did not allow the Mashai Family to be present in the meeting. The lawyer representing the Mokabane family was also asked to be excused as there was no legal presentation for the mine in the meeting. The mine stated that they do not have a problem with the families visiting the graves, however; the families need to notify the mine a week before, for security measures. The families would however have restricted access, as they cannot go there at night. The delegation undertook a site visit. The first site that was inspected was the rock art on the rock. The rock has been demarcated by palisade fencing, and the Chief stated that he would like to have the keys to the site, so that he can limit access. The second site was where the alleged graves used to be. It was said that there used to be five graves, however three graves are missing. The area where the graves are missing, has an underground shaft built there.
