Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

Proposed recovery of exposed Plio-Pleistocene aged fossils, and excavation of in-situ fossils in an underground fossil locality in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage site, Gauteng Province.

Expanded_Motivation:

A fossil locality has been discovered in an ante-chamber of known cave system in the vicinity of Bolts Farm. The locality has been discovered approximately 20 - 30 meters below ground. Details of the location of the cave and the location of the fossil deposit have been forwarded to SAHRA by separate email. This permit is an application to recover Plio-Pleistocene aged fossils that are exposed on the surface of a decalcified deposit and which are in imminent danger due to being exposed to human traffic. Once these fossils have been recovered, excavations to recover the remaining in-situ material will be made. Samples of rock material will also be taken for dating purposes. Recovery and excavation methods will follow established best practice and include laser mapping of the site and deposits and each individual fossil recovered. Preparation, cataloguing and storage will follow that outlined for the Malapa project. Access to the ante-chamber will be improved and if deemed necessary, security will be put in place though any infrastructure deemed necessary for such purposes will be applied for under separate permit. The fossils will be housed in the collections of the University of the Witwatersrand.
