Development Type:

ProposalDescription:

Due to the increasing water demand in the areas supplied by the Mkhizwana Water Treatment Works, there is an urgent need for an increase in the treatment capacity of the plant. The upgrade will entail a 2.7 Ml/day increase in treatment capacity of the current 1.3Ml/day to the required 4 Ml/day. All proposed upgrades will take place within the existing boundary of the site.

Expanded_Motivation:

The project will result in an improvement in the quality and quantity of portable water available to the community. The project will also reduce the water losses currently experienced. Short term benefits will accrue to the local community in the form of temporary employment opportunities for unskilled labour. Long term benefits will include the potential to expand the availability of formal housing in area as a sustainable supply of portable water able to meet the growing water requirements will be available. The majority of the population has no formal education and is illiterate. Most people earn a living from governmental social grants, pensions and others from informal trading. Development of this area is therefore paramount and the upgrade of the existing water treatment works can be considered the first step in this direction toward upliftment of the community.
