ProposalDescription:

Urgent Temporary Stabilisation of Kiln at the Drimolen National Heritage Site, Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, Gauteng

Expanded_Motivation:

The 19th Century Lime Kiln at the Drimolen National Heritage Site was inspected in May and June 2014 after a concern from another Drimolen permit holder regarding its condition was passed on to the COH WHS MA and SAHRA. It has been found that the two earthen embankments protecting the face of the kiln have suffered from extensive erosion after the extremely heavy 2013/14 rainy season in the COH WHS. There has also been subsequent erosion between the two inspections in May and June 2014, prompting an agreement between SAHRA (APM Unit) and the COH WHS MA that both the long term and short term stabilisation of the kiln must be prioritised. To this end, as discussed with the APM unit, the MA will attend to placing a barrier of packed sterile breccia (sourced from the site) along the exposed face, as the temporary stabilisation and erosion measure. The long term measure is still to be agreed upon.
