Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

The HIA recorded two "sites" comprising low density background scatter artefacts which SAHRA requested mitigation of if they could not be avoided. They lie within the development footprint and so it is proposed to visit these sites and collect up the artefacts within an appropriate grid based on the artefact density.

Expanded_Motivation:

The artefact scatters will initially be surveyed in order to determine their spatial extent and density. An appropriately sized collection grid will then be be laid over the site using long tape measures. The HIA listed both sites as being in the region of 1 artefact per square meter and that they covered some 20 m by 20 m. This density will not be appropriate to the use of a 1 sq m grid and it is likely that squares of 2 m by 2 m will be more appropriate. The artefacts will be collected from the surface by hand and it is unlikely that any material will be sieved because of the gravelly nature of the substrate. However, excavation equipment will be brought to site in case this is neded so as to ensure capture of all artefacts. All artefacts will be bagged and returned to Cape Town for analysis. On completion of the project, the material will be stored at the Archaeology Department of the Ditsong: National Museum of Cultural History, Pretoria. The sites are on Waterloo Farm 992, south of Vryburg, Northwest Province.
