Expanded_Motivation:

Proposed renovations of Hilltop Camp Rondavels in Hluhluwe Game Reserve, KZN. It is proposed to renovate the existing 20 rondavels that date back to the 1940's, in-situ, by adding an internal kitchenette and shower plus toilet and renewing the thatch and making repairs to the plaster where necessary. These rondavels have had extensive repairs and changes over the last 70 plus years in that most of the doors are no longer located in the original positions and some windows have been relocated as well. It would not make sense to reposition these doors and windows as the supporting infrastructure has also changed and the current doors open onto the existing paths. However the sense of place of the rondavels has endured and it is this quality that Ezemvelo specifically wishes to retain whilst meeting the need for repairs and renovations. The thatch and concrete capstones will be repaired and the height of the chalets and the thatch roof silhouette will remain the same. The chimney caps have been missing for many years and will not be reinstated as each unit has electricity. The footprint will remain the same although the walls at the rear will be moved to the outer edge of the concrete footprints to accommodate the shower-toilet and kitchenette areas. The outside wall’s colour has changed from white to an earth colour. In keeping with the organizational policy, earth tones will be used again. The original windows had coining around them and this will be reinstated on those where this has been lost over the years. The old steel windows and more recently introduced louver windows will be replaced with anodized aluminum coloured to resemble the original steel windows. In this manner it is intended to retain the character of the original rondavels that visitors to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve have enjoyed for over 70 years.
