FullStatementOfSignificance:

Its literal meaning is ‘Gentlemen’s Lodging’. Its relative large size offers good protection from the elements and a nearby perennial fountain made a visit to the site even more attractive in the past. The heritage significance of this site relates to the engraved graffiti placed on the walls of this large shelter by famous historical figures while they camped on their way to and/or from Cape Town. The names of Oloff Bergh, Simon van der Stel, Francois Vailant and others dating from 1665 to about 1860 can be still seen on the cave walls. A cracked iron pot of unknown origin and a large and old milkwood tree form part of the character of this site.
