Originally known as Bommelshok, the farm was one of the oldest of the dutch East India Company's cattle posts, being mentioned in the journal of 1677 whren johan Bax was governor. The farmstead is probably as old as the nearby Vissershok homestead and took its name from Jan Van Brommel.
