ProposalDescription:

We would like to enquire if a paleontology study is needed for the proposed sewer pipeline in Centurion, Gauteng province. I have attached the kmz of the proposed pipeline, which is 11.4 km in length. The pipeline will be buried 2-3 meters underground.

Expanded_Motivation:

According to the Palaeontology map on SAHRIS website, a small section (about 10 % in extent) of the proposed sewer pipeline falls within very sensitive and moderate sensitivity. The remaining 90% falls within insignificant/ zero sensitivity. We have appointed a Heritage specialist to undertake a Heritage Impact Assessment. According to the specialist report, no sites, features or objects of cultural significance are known to exist in the study area, there would be no impact as a result of the proposed development. Therefore, from a heritage point of view its recommend that the proposed development can continue on condition of acceptance of mitigation measure - that if archaeological sites or graves are exposed during development activities, it should immediately be reported to a heritage consultant so that an investigation and evaluation of the finds can be made. Can you kindly advise if any paleontology studies will need to be conducted for the area? Or If it is possible to include the following mitigation measures regarding paleontological resources in the EMPr: * Should any paleontological remains be discovered on site all activities should cease immediately? * The finding must be reported to a palaeontologist and South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) to conduct an investigation and evaluation of the finds made. Any guidance will be highly appreciated.
