ProposalDescription:

Proposed repairs to a specifically declared antique 18th Century Cape Grandfather Clock

Expanded_Motivation:

Proposed repairs to the clock. Plan of the proposed repairs as proposed by Mr Snyman 1.The clock runs, but the minute hand does not move; nor does the clock strike. When induced by hand to strike, the strike sequence (large bell vs small bell) is incorrect a) Findings On further examination, faults were found as follows: • The pipe through which the minute hand arbor passes, between the front plate of the movement and the dial, is loose in its mounting bracket; this stops the minute hand (and hour hand) from moving, even though the pendulum may be oscillating. The pipe needs to be secured in its bracket. • Gathering pallet (which is involved in “counting” the hours struck) bush is worn, preventing the strike from working correctly. The bush needs to be replaced. • The arbor on which the hammers are mounted, does not move freely between the movement plates. This prevents the two hammers from striking in the correct sequence on the two (different tone) bells. The reason for the poor movement needs to be identified and corrected, once the movement has been dismantled. The movement needs to be removed from the cabinet, observed on a test stand in a clock workshop; dismantled to correct the faults as above; re-assembled, tested again and re-installed in the cabinet. 2 Repairs: Dismantle clock movement; clean bushes and pivots Repair minute hand arbor pipe Replace worn gathering pallet bush Parts: replacement bush Repair of malfunction; strike hammer arbor Transport from workshop; replacement in cabinet: 3. Expert conservator who has been approached to conduct the repairs Chris Snyman MBHI (Member: British Horological Institute) Estimated timeframes for the repair 4 – 6 Weeks
