Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

History: Established during the 1880's and named after Sir Bartle Frere. Used as headquarters for British, An impressive sandstone building designed by Kent and price and officially opened in December 1901.
Visual Description: Built of Natal red brick with a hipped corrugated iron roof. Has oregon sash windows and a wrapround verandah. Symmetrical in shape and is double-storied. Alterations: rehabilitation with extensive rear addition and new buildings.

Site Features:Designed in the neo-classical style; one-and-a-half storied hall of unique design; roof of varied rhthms with ventilation turret: Interior: very fine fireplace in rooms converted as Council Chambers.
Alterations: Converted into civic hall in the 1930's when extensive alterations carried out and new rear stoepadded; all additions blend well with the originaldesighn intention.

From the N3 take the Colenso turn-off. Head north to Colenso. Immediately one passes Frere on the ri Situated at St Gregory College on the old Colenso-Estcourt Road at the tiny hamlet of Frere.
