SAHRA has declared the West Coast Fossil Park as a National Heritage Site
The SAHRA Archaeology, Palaeontology and Meteorites Unit has the pleasure of announcing that the West Coast Fossil Park has been officially declared a National Heritage Site. The publication of the Gazette Notice declaring West Coast Fossil Park as a National Heritage Site appeared in Government Gazette No. 38232 on 28 November 2014, and was the culmination of years of work towards this aim.
The West Coast Fossil Park located at Langebaanweg in the Western Cape includes a fossil bed dating back approximately five million years, originally discovered in the floor of an open-cast phosphate mine during the 1960s. Scientific excavation and research at the site has produced in excess of a million vertebrate fossils that have been acclaimed for their superb preservation and diversity. The West Coast Fossil Park is regarded as possibly the most significant Early Pliocene terrestrial fossil occurrence worldwide.
