Expanded_Motivation:

The proposed project entails is the construction of a new loop of 3.3km next to the existing railway line between Thabazimbi and Lephalale. A loop is a place on a railway line where trains travelling in opposite directions can pass each other. A loop is usually double ended and connected to the main track at both ends. Construction works for the project will include the following: - Civil Construction of a 3.3 kilometer long loop of 20t axle loading with formation layers according to the standard Transnet specification. The construction of the new loop will traverse through an embankment which ranges from ±0.5m to ± 2m high between Km points 77.100 to 80.400. - Perway The perway scope includes the installation of 3.3 kilometer track. - Signalling Install a localized remote control system to enable the Train Driver to remotely operate tangential point sets on both sides of the loop. The system uses a radio control to detect train presence. - Structures There is a total of four (4) box culverts in this loop. There is no extension of culverts required. The four existing culverts and headwalls were designed and constructed in such a manner that it can accommodate the proposed loop line. This railway line was constructed in 1980 together with the associated structures.
