ProposalDescription:

The site BOE16 in Limpopo Province, South Africa, had conservation work on the rock art panels done in 2012 by Ms Claire Dean and Associates. At the same time, dust and animal control to the site was mitigated by RARI. Since 2012, birds have continued to nest in the shelter, dropping their old/used nests on the panels and in the process create dust on the panels and the floor. Shrubs that were put to prevent animals from accessing the site dried up and hence donkeys and cattle access the site from this point of weakness. As a result, the panel is in dire need of cleaning and the site floor needs to be stabilized and access controlled or closed off for animals. Following preliminary cleaning of BOE 16, it has been realized that some stains on the panel are not bird droppings but rather emanate from the 2012 intervention conducted by Claire Dean regarding the use of gel.

Expanded_Motivation:

I have worked with Ms Claire Dean cleaning rock art panels at Main Caves and at BOE 16 in 2012. I have been trained and have the expertise to clean the panel, together with Mr Elijah Katsetse who was also trained by Claire Dean on the cleaning projects. I worked with Benjamin smith and three students mapping and stabilizing the floor of BOE 16. We know the materials required as I was the person who purchased them for the 2012 exercises, on instruction from Claire Dean. We have no doubt that we are very capable of handling this project without damaging the panel or the site. We shall use distilled water and soft brushes and sponges to clean. This site is the most visited site of all sites in the Makgabeng. Tests are being done to determine the clear spirit and procedure to use to remove the gel from the panel. Gel close to paintings may not be removed should the images be threatened by such action.
