Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

Application for the investigation into the presence of grave at the Lufhureng Development, located at boundary of Farm Portion 111 and Farm Portion 110, Remainder of PTN 62 of the farm Doornkop 239IQ,

Expanded_Motivation:

During the construction stage of the bulk sewer main evidence of graves were discovered on site parallel to the new sewer pipeline being installed. These “graves” were discovered on the 16th of May 2012, by labourers of the Contractor on site (MIS Pipelines (Pty) Ltd). The estimated number of the possible graves has been counted to be 10 and located at boundary of Farm Portion 111 and Farm Portion 110, Remainder of PTN 62, Doornkop 239 IQ - (approximate coordinated to Y = 79458.487 X = -2905296.358 and Y = 79486.293 X = -2905302.387). The alignment of the sewer main did not directly impact the position of the possible grave during construction in 2012. However the next phase of development requires the sewer main to be extended through the area where the possible graves are located. The possible affected graves are within Phase 1 of the Lufhereng Integrated Housing Project and to prevent any impact to these grave sites City of Johannesburg Housing prefers them to be relocated to a safe location. PGS Heritage has been appointed by Bigen Africa to test for and if required relocated identified graves in the pipeline servitude. PGS will further also be assisted in this regard by Martins Funeral Directors. At this stage the scope of the project is only the verification of the presence of graves. In the event that it is found that human remains are present the test excavations will be backfilled and a full grave relocation process compliant with Regulation 548 and Section 36 of the NHRA will be initiated.
