ProposalDescription:

Proposed photogrammetric survey of the wreck of HMS Birkenhead, lost off Danger Point in the Western Cape in 1852.

Expanded_Motivation:

This project is an international collaborative effort by the Maritime Archaeology Sea Trust and Bournemouth University in the United Kingdom, and ACO Associates and the African Centre for Heritage Activities in South Africa to undertake a photogrammetric survey of the wreck of HMS Birkenhead, located off Danger Point in the Western Cape. The aim of the project is to record as much of the wreck of the Birkenhead as possible to create a 2D and 3D virtual record which will increase our understanding of the site and its condition. To date no formal archaeological work has taken place on the site and our understanding of the wreck site is based on the reports of salvage oriented interventions in the site, and on a handful of publicly accessible photographs. It is hoped that the information gathered will mitigate the continuing natural deterioration of the wreck and the past impact of salvage work and provide a baseline for the future management of the site. The results of the survey will also be shared as a virtual and interactive online dive trail since no public access to the site is allowed. A key secondary objective of the project will be to support the development of underwater photogrammetric survey and post production process expertise within the maritime archaeological communities of the UK and South Africa and increase capacity for similar future projects in both countries. The proposed work will be wholly non-intrusive and there will be no physical intervention in the wreck site. This application is for a pre-disturbance permit to undertake the proposed survey.
