Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation

Photogrammetric Survey of the wreck of HMS Birkenhead

The Maritime and Underwater Cultural Heritage (MUCH) unit at the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) is pleased to issue the abovementioned permit.

The following terms and conditions apply:

1. If the permit holder is not present on the site at all times, SAHRA must be provided with the names and qualifications of his authorised representative(s).

2. Work must be limited to the photogrammetric survey of the wreck of the “HMS Birkenhead.” The survey may only be carried out within a 200m radius of the co-ordinate given as the centre of the wreck site:

-34.6346 S     19.2857 E

3. This permit gives the holder the sole authorisation to conduct a photogrammetric survey at the above location to document and record the remains of the wreck of the “HMS Birkenhead” for the duration of the permit period.

4. Equipment permitted on site must be limited to what is needed to execute the project as described in the Project Design document.

5. This permit does not grant the holder authorisation to disturb any archaeological material and is solely limited to a non-intrusive survey of the wreck. Should archaeological material be accidentally disturbed during the course of the survey, SAHRA must be informed immediately. In this event, work must cease and may not commence until feedback has been received from SAHRA.

6. Should any heritage material be identified as being associated with any heritage resource other than the wreck of the “HMS Birkenhead,” the MUCH Unit at SAHRA must be informed immediately. An area around any such locality may be subsequently excluded from the survey area referred to in (2) at the discretion of SAHRA.

7. Adequate recording methods must be employed during all work under this permit. The survey data and results must be submitted to the MUCH Unit at SAHRA together with the permit report referred to in (9).

8. A detailed log book must be kept to record daily progress, the mapping, location and features of the site, and sea and weather conditions. This information must be submitted to the MUCH Unit at SAHRA on request.

9. A final report on the results of the survey must be submitted to SAHRA within two (2) months of the expiry of this permit. Should the work be completed before the expiry of this permit, the final report shall be due within two (2) months of the last day of work undertaken under the authority of this permit.

10. Reprints of all published papers and/or copies of theses and/or reports resulting from this work must be lodged with SAHRA.

11. If a published report has not appeared within three years of the lapsing of this permit, the report required in terms of the permit will be made available to researchers on request.

12. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to properties or persons, regardless of whether they are under the employ of the permit holder, volunteering their assistance with the works, or members of the public, as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

13. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.

14. A person who wishes to appeal the decision to grant this permit may do so within fourteen (14) days of the issuing of this permit.

15. Work is permitted to take place between 28 April 2020 and 28 October 2021.
