ProposalDescription:

Proposed repair of main building and shed roof and replacement of Shed windows at Gordon Road Girls School, 69 Gordon Road, Erf 945 and 257 Lilian Ngoyi Road, Rem of 802, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal Drawing no. 22-76-SD01, 1045-100-001/002/003

Expanded_Motivation:

Existing roofs of the main building (built in 1961-62) and the Shed (construction date unknown, built between 1917 and 1930) have been surveyed and are in need of repair. (refer to motivation letter from the principal) The roofs were inspected by A.Ibrahim of ATI Africa Consulting Engineers and found that rafters and battens had been damaged by borer. Existing Marseille tiles were in good condition and can be reused. The Shed is a rectangular structure built with facebrick plinth walls and buttresses, timber framed windows and window panels and "Tudor" style timber ring beam, trusses and ridge beam with exposed timber joints and pins. The trusses, beams and posts have been attacked by termites and borer. Further investigation will reveal the full extent of the damage. It is proposed to replace 4 timber posts, all tiling battens, waterproofing layer and insulation, damaged ceiling panels where necessary and damaged beams or structural members where necessary. Windows are proposed to be replaced with aluminium frames to match existing design. Aluminium is better for maintenance and ease of use by the pupils and teachers.
