Changes to SAHRIS!

Following comments received on the proposed Revised Schedule of Fees for applications made to the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA), made in terms of Section 25(2)(l) of the National Heritage Resources Act No. 25 of 1999 (NHRA) and published in the Government Gazette of 22 July 2022, SAHRA hereby publishes the final Revised Schedule of Fees for Applications made to SAHRA. Applications for provision of services submitted to the South African Heritage Resources Authority (SAHRA), in terms of the National Heritage Resources Act, No. 25 of 1999 (NHRA) must be accompanied by a payment of the appropriate fee, taking effect from 1 January 2023

SS Lyngenfjord salvage: Operations / Activities

Background: The SS Lyngenfjord was a Norweigan cargo steamer that sank off Tsitsikama on 14 January 1938 while en route from France to Madagascar. She was 5627 tons and carrying a cargo of cement, timber and liquor. The site was salvaged in 1980 by Malcolm Turner who was employed as a diver by African Offshore Services at the time. In a sworn letter (attached), Turner describes the two four-bladed manganese bronze propellers. With a sea fisheries permit to blast at the site, the divers broke the two propellers into pieces and over the course of a month, moved the loose blades and other parts (including various bronze pumps, valves and copper pipes) into a stockpile in deeper water with the intent to return for them at a later date with a vessel to lift and salvage. Due to the heavy surf conditions experienced along this stretch of coastline, the materials were not recovered and the site was abandoned. Turner has ceded any legal rights he may have to the stockpile to Jimmy Uys and Paul du Rand. The MUCH Unit invited comments regarding the need for a permit for the salvage of the stockpile and it was determined that a permit was indeed required. The MUCH Unit hereby invites comments regarding the issuing of a permit to Uys and du Rand to salvage the stockpile.
