Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

Upgrade of existing gravel road on the Schroda property (Mapungubwe National Park) to concrete road. The steep and rocky terrain of road is increasingly being damaged during extended periods of heavy rains. In order to prevent irreversible environmental damage, the upgrade of approximately 400m of gravel road to concrete paved road, is proposed. The project is part of MPNP's road infrastructure programme and also forms part of the Biodiversity Offset Agreement between SANParks and Vele Mine. Limpopo Province.

Expanded_Motivation:

The road between the existing concrete slab from the De Beers Schroda Pump Station towards the Vhembe Wilderness Camp junction is applicable. The road passes the Schroda Archaeological SIte. The existing gravel road crosses a fairly steep hill with rocky terrain. As a result, the area is subject to soil run-off during heavy rainfall. The road surface is therefore becoming increasingly difficult to grade as the substrate is no longer adequate. This may cause irreversible environmental damage in the long-term if not attended to. It is therefore proposed to pave the applicable section of road with concrete, similar to the lower section between the Schroda Site and the De Beers Schroda Pump Station. Design detail. • approximately 400 meters of road be upgraded from a gravel, to a concrete paved road, • Road width not to exceed 3.2 m for 100m and 4.6 m for 300m • Two additional drifts for drainage control must be constructed at the end of the existing concrete road. Technical specifications; • An in-situ road sub-base must be constructed with a minimal cross fall of 2% (for surface drainage). • 3.2 meter to 4.6 meter wide, • 125 mm thick, 25Mpa concrete, • Steel reinforcement of welded mesh • Concrete surface to be rough brushed • The concrete wearing course must be casted as in-situ panels and the panels must be “keyed” together.
