Oh, yes, I saw your suggestion, did not realise you thought it was a confirmed meeting.
I'll discuss this with Jenty when he arrives and inform you of a suitable date and time.

thanks Nancy

Hi Nancy - yes, I was aiming for Friday 9:30 from the last email I sent you copied below..

***
Hi Nancy - I've asked Andree Jacobs to come and see us on Tuesday 13th at 2pm about the NAS devices for SAHRIS. I'm busy writing up the terms of reference to increase our storage capacity to 50 terabytes (currently have 2 + 48 in the NAS enclosures - actually 100 terabytes installed but half of the drives are in RAID). These will be purchased from the SAHRIS budget.

As per our call today, it would be good to meet with the IT Team next week on 9th November in the morning - say 9:30, to discuss ways in which we can streamline the disaster recovery plan and our other offices.
Attached are some notes that I jotted down regarding this which can be fleshed out into proper plans and strategies going forward.
Kind regards,
Nic

Meeting Friday?

>>> Nicholas Wiltshire 2012/11/05 10:31 AM >>>
Thanks Nancy - the list of items I sent you was not a set of decisions, only notes/suggestions on possible streamlining of SAHRIS and the IT Unit. Each one would have to be carefully weighed up and debated within the IT Unit in discussion with the affected units (eg Finance, National Inventory) - hence we are meeting on Friday to start that discussion towards a proper plan.
All the best,
Nic

Hi Nic,

The reason why I asked you to wait with the meeting with Andree from MWeb is because it seems like you were running ahead, without first briefing the IT Unit of SAHRA.

It is really important that you ensure that any ideas you have for the SAHRIS project, is aligned with the strategic plans of SAHRA firstly, and secondly with that of the IT Unit.

I appreciate your comments in the attachment, but I also need you to respect the fact that all the items you list are know to the IT Unit and are currently being discussed with our SLA partner. Like I said to you telephoncally I have already identified the fact that the SAT / EC and WC offices, which due to the whole provincialisation debackle were badly neglected in terms of infrasture for the last two years, need to be centralised with HO.

A centralised system is far more effective than the current decentralised system of data / backup / connectivity etc. This current situation is clearly not condusive and therefore the new IT Manager should be briefed first and the IT Unit can make recommendations etc. to Council for approval, in terms of drastic changes.

Although SAHRA's IT Policy has identified FOSS as a priority, it does not dictate that it should be implemented on all levels, e.g. backends, front ends, databases, mail systems etc. It does however mean that we should not be locked into expensive software/development situations where we pay exhaubetant license fees. Even FOSS developed by contractor workters may in the end be more costly than an off the shelf system, especially when supporting such a system is locked into by one developer or contract worker.

Can you please just hold back until the IT Manager has started, so I can set up a meeting with all conserned, at which you can brief him on SAHRIS and where it is going.

Thank you
Nancy
