Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

Launch for the new version of SAHRIS occurred on Monday the 30th of October 2023.

The unveiling of liberation struggle hero Mr. Vusumzi Saul Mkhize statue

Mr. Vusumuzi Saul Mkhize was born on the 6th June 1935 and died on the 2nd April 1983. He was an accountant working in Johannesburg and would visit Driefontein over weekends. He attended the meetings of the Driefontein Community Board (DCB) from 20 May 1981 until December 1982. When he realized that the DCB was agreeing to the proposal of the relocation/removal of legitimate Black landowners, he together with others formed the Board of the village to oppose removals. This later became the Council Board of Directors of which he served as its chairperson.

SAHRIS as a tool for reporting, tracking and monitoring heritage crime

SAHRIS can now be used as a centralised, integrated platform for reporting, tracking and monitoring heritage crime that serves to facilitate co-ordinated action against instances of heritage crime by heritage practitioners, museum staff, law enforcement officers and other relevant stakeholders. The system makes it possible to monitor instances of crime and derive statistics about the prevalence of these crimes geographically and through time.

SAHRA has declared the West Coast Fossil Park as a National Heritage Site

The SAHRA Archaeology, Palaeontology and Meteorites Unit has the pleasure of announcing that the West Coast Fossil Park has been officially declared a National Heritage Site. The publication of the Gazette Notice declaring West Coast Fossil Park as a National Heritage Site appeared in Government Gazette No. 38232 on 28 November 2014, and was the culmination of years of work towards this aim.

In Heritage Month, to celebrate of 20 years of democracy SAHRA presents 20 sites that have been declared National Heritage Sites since the promulgation of the National Heritage Resources Act (Act 25 of 1999).
