Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

  1. This permit is issued to Prof. Pikirayi for the excavation of four Iron Age sites within the Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape on Farm Samaria. It is understood that survey and sampling of soil samples will also be undertaken in the area. 
  2. If Prof. Pikirayi is not to be present on the site at all times then SAHRA must be provided with the names and qualifications of the authorised representatives.
  3. Adequate recording methods as specified in the Regulations and Guidelines pertaining to the National Heritage Resources Act must be employed.  Note that the position of all excavations and objects collected must be marked on a plan of site.
  4. A standard site record form must be lodged with the University of Pretoria Museum. 
  5. All archaeological material collected and excavated, as well as field notes and records, will be curated by the University of Pretoria. However, SAHRA understands that Prof. Pikirayi and SANPark are discussing the possibility of storing the recovered material on site, this arrangement must be approved by SAHRA. Please note that SAHRA encourages that wherever possible the material be kept in the province and stored in a suitable repository within the province. 
  6. This permit is valid until the end of December 2014, and it is dependent on the signed agreement between Prof. Pikirayi and SanParks. Excavation of the four sites may not occur after the expiration of the permit, however survey activities are excluded from this deadline. 
  7. An annual progress report on the results of the excavations and analyses must be submitted to SAHRA before the end of 2014 and and a final report is due on or before the end of December 2015.
  8. Reprints of all published papers or copies of theses and/or reports resulting from this work must be lodged with SAHRA.
  9. If a published report has not appeared within three years of the lapsing of this permit, the report required in terms of the permit will be made available to researchers on request.
  10. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to obtain permission from the landowner for each visit, and conditions of access imposed by the landowner must be observed.
  11. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to fill in excavations and protect sites during and after excavation to the satisfaction of SAHRA and the landowner.
  12. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.
  13. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.
  14. This permit does not exclude the permit holder from applying to any other necessary permits under NEMPAA.
