Activities:

Conditions:

1. Test excavations allowed for would include 180 test pits at 200 meter intervals (on a 200 meter grid system) at a depth of 2.5-3 meters. Digging may be extended up to 10 square meters only if something indicative is found, and these extensions must be indicated in the report.
2. We endorse the use of a mini/ micro excavator, noting the challenges of vegetation, up until archaeological deposits are encountered, and the archaeologist needs to assess the findings before mechanical digging can commence.
3. Where archaeological material is exposed, the excavation should be stopped and the archaeologist must assess, record (describe and photograph) the material in situ. The excavation must then be closed and a marker placed to indicate the point of intersection.
4. Should a burial be encountered, it must be inspected as noted in condition no. 3 above. The test pit must be backfilled and the position of the burial indicated with a red flag.
5. All vegetation clearing, prior to test excavation should be monitored by the archaeologist.
6. If the permit holder is not to be present on the site at all times then SAHRA must be provided with the names and qualifications of the authorised representatives. Considering that we are dealing with a sensitive terrain, the representative must be of same qualification and experience as the permit holder.
7. Adequate recording methods as specified in the Regulations and Guidelines pertaining to the National Heritage Resources Act must be used. All trial holes must be logged and photographed.
8. A standard site record form must be lodged with the Albany Museum.
9. A report must be submitted to SAHRA on or before 01 June 2012. SAHRA reserves the right to withhold further permits if progress is not deemed satisfactory.
10. Reprints of all published papers, or copies of theses or reports resulting from this work must be lodged with SAHRA.
11. If a published report has not appeared within three years of the lapsing of this permit, the report required in terms of the permit will be made available to researchers on request.
12. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to obtain permission from the landowner for each visit, and conditions of access imposed by the landowner must be observed.
13. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to fill in excavations and protect sites during and after excavation to the satisfaction of SAHRA and the landowner.
14. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.
15. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.
