Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

Launch for the new version of SAHRIS occurred on Monday the 30th of October 2023.

Conditions: 

1. Work must be limited to the exploration of the site believed to contain the “Sarpine”.
2. No wreckage or artefacts may be removed or disturbed in any way without an excavation permit from SAHRA.
This pre-disturbance survey permit does not guarantee that a permit will be issued for future work.
3. A detailed log book must be kept to record daily progress, the mapping and location of finds and features of the wreck and sea and weather conditions.
4. A copy of this logbook must be submitted to SAHRA.
5. The SAHRA maritime archaeologist may request at any reasonable time, an update on the work carried out.
6. A final report on activities connected with this permit must be submitted to SAHRA within six months after the permit has lapsed. Failure to do so may adversely affect any future applications by the permit holder. Reprints of all papers, theses or reports resulting from this work must be lodged with SAHRA.
7. If satisfactory progress reports are not submitted to SAHRA, this permit may be cancelled.
8. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to protect the site during and after the permit duration to the satisfaction of SAHRA.
9. The SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.
10. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder
11. The permit is subject to a general appeal and may be suspended should an appeal against the decisions be received by SAHRA within 14 days of the date of the permit
12. SAHRA may not be held responsible for any costs or losses incurred in the event of the suspension or retraction of this permit.
