Conditions:

1. A complete photographic record must be made of the site as it is now.
2. All developments must be in keeping with the management plan for the site and must maintain “the site’s connectedness with the surrounding grassland landscape” and “extend¬ed views westwards, northwards and eastwards” (Sterkfontein Site Management Plan, section 4). Paths and the timber walkway through the Isaac Edwin Stegman Reserve must be approved by DACE in terms of the botanical aspects and the route of the paths should be checked (by Professor Partridge) so as to avoid any special stromatolite features. The latter could be incorporated by means of a storyboard for interest. Path structures should be sensitive in colouration and texture to, and leave no building residue, in the environment and will presumably be disabled friendly.
3. If the permit holder is not to be present on the site at all times then SAHRA must be provided with the names and qualifications of the authorised representatives. An arrangement must be made, as indicated in the application, with Professor Partridge, to monitor these developments and the permitted scientist on the site must be consulted, especially with regard to the building of the deck, the skin on the steps and the fence.
4. The tarred road direct to the site will remain and be accessible for the use of scientists and adequate measures will be taken to ensure the security of the site and of the fossils on site and in the preparation laboratory.
5. A report must be submitted to SAHRA on or before 1 December 2005.
6. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to obtain permission from the landowner for each visit, and the developer is responsible for ensuring that he or she has a written understanding with the landowner concerning conditions of working on the site and conditions of access.
7. The developer shall be responsible for the activities and impacts of all colleagues and employees under his or her supervision and for their compliance with the terms of the Heritage Agreement and the Management Plan for this site.
8. The developer must take measures to ensure the safety of any person who may enter the National Heritage Site as part of their team or as their visitor.
9. The permit holder including colleagues, visitors, students and employees under the direct supervision of the permit holder must carry documents of identification indicating their legitimacy to be on the National Heritage Site.
10. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to protect sites during and after development to the satisfaction of SAHRA and the landowner
