Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

Excavation of a LIA site affected by the expansion of Wonderkop Quarry, North West province

This permit is issued to Mr Pelser for the mitigation of a Late Iron Age site which will be affected by the expansion of the rock dump at the Wonderkop quarry (Site ID 32742 on SAHRIS). The site will be investigated through 5 to 10 shovel test pits and possibly 3 formal trenches. The significance of the site has yet to be assessed. 

Conditions:

  1. If Mr Pelser is not to be present on site at all times during mitigation then SAHRA must be provided with the names and qualifications of the authorised representatives.
  2. Adequate recording methods as specified in the Regulations and Guidelines pertaining to the National Heritage Resources Act must be employed.  Note that the position of all excavations and objects collected must be marked on a plan of the site.
  3. A standard site record form must be lodged with the Ditsong Museums of South Africa.
  4. All archaeological material collected and excavated, as well as field notes and records, will be curated by the Ditsong Museums of South Africa.
  5. A progress report on the results of the excavations and analyses must be submitted to SAHRA before the end of October 2015. A final report is due before the end of October 2016 or before a destruction permit for the site may be applied for.
  6. The final report must accompany the recording of the site on SAHRIS. All applicable fields must be completed (http://www.sahra.org.za/sites/wonderkop-quarry-lia). The final report must specify the significance of the site in the light of the results of the activities undertaken under this permit. The full extent of the site must also be mapped. 
  7. Reprints of all published papers or copies of theses and/or reports resulting from this work must be lodged with SAHRA.
  8. If a published report has not appeared within three years of the lapsing of this permit, the report required in terms of the permit will be made available to researchers on request.
  9. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to obtain permission from the landowner for each visit, and conditions of access imposed by the landowner must be observed.
  10. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to fill in excavations and protect sites during and after excavation to the satisfaction of SAHRA and the landowner.
  11. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.
  12. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.
