Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

A new & modernised look and layout
Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
Improved site performance and stability

Launch for the new version of SAHRIS occurred on Monday the 30th of October 2023.

The site is located 150 m north of the existing 66 Kv powerline above the town of Ceres.

SiteComments:

The site comprises a large sandstone overhang obscured by thick bush and trees in an otherwise large open clearing. Several paintings, some relatively well preserved, occur within the shelter. Some graffiti also occurs within shelter.

Relatively large numbers of LSA tools were found inside the overhang, mainly in several drip lines across the floor of the shelter. A few tools were found outside the shelter as well. These include both modified and unmodified tools in fine-grained silcrete and pebble quartz, as well as coarse-grained quartzite’s. Several pieces of red ochre were also noted, including one ground piece.

One piece of blackened, coarse tempered pottery was found.

Rock Art

Several paintings, some relatively well preserved, occur within the shelter. These comprise a serpent/snake-like painting in yellow ochre with thin red ochre outline. A thick line of red ochre has been painted across the image. A painting of an indeterminate animal occurs directly beneath this . Both paintings appear to be vandalized, especially the latter, although exfoliation from recent fires in the area cannot be discounted. There are several other paintings that are located inside the shelter, but these are either very faded, or have been deliberately vandalized, including another long serpent/snake-like image painted in yellow with red outline.
