Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

Holding of "Defending the Caveman" Play in Sterkfontein Caves

This permit is issued to Ms. Lindsey Smith as representative of the Management Authority of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, in collaboration with Maropeng, the University of Witwatersrand and Tim Plewman, for the hosting of the event and play “Defending the Caveman” within the extension of the Fossil Chamber of the Sterkfontein Caves, Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, Mogale City, Gauteng. This event will include the set up and take down of infrastructure (free-standing scaffolding seating and stage, the legs of which will be placed on marine plywood and double rubble matting, free-standing roped bollards, limited free-standing LED (cold) lighting, one fan and two speakers) before and after the event, to be monitored by the University of Witwatersrand and the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site Management Authority. The 4-day event will be monitored by Maropeng.

Conditions:

1. As mentioned in the application,

- monitoring must be done by the University of Witwatersrand and the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site Management Authority during set up and take down of the infrastructure, and by Maropeng during the 4-day event.

- sensitive areas within extension of the Fossil Chamber will have to be marked off and avoided, and the infrastructure team must be made aware of these;

- no infrastructure may be fixed to the cave floor and no guests may touch the floor;

- no food or drink may be allowed inside the caves.

2. All waste material and left over equipment will be removed from the site once the installation has been completed, and the site will be left in the manner it was found (save for the new installation).

3. It is understood that the COHWHS MA will photograph the affected area prior to the event, and again after the event has been completed.

4. A final report on the results of the maintenance activities should be submitted to SAHRA by the end of May 2016.

5. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

6. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.
