Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

This permit is issued to Prof. Frederick Grine in collaboration with Dr Wendy Black and Prof. Richard G. Klein for the export of twelve faunal samples (bovid teeth and bone) and three hominin teeth from Die Kelders 1, Western Cape Province, South Africa. The material is to be exported to Prof. Eske Willerslev of the Lundbeck Foundation Centre for GeoGenetics, Copenhagen, Denmark for the extraction of aDNA. 

Conditions: 

  1. The specimens must be clearly marked with their accession numbers. 
  2. The material must be carefully packed and all packaging must be clearly marked with the accession numbers, the name of the site, and the name and address of the Iziko Museums of South Africa and of the Lundbeck Foundation Centre for GeoGenetics at the Natural History Museum of the University of Copenhagen.
  3. The material must be hand carried or sent via a reputable professional courier service unless written instructions to the contrary have been received from the repository, the Iziko Museums of South Africa. SAHRA understands that Prof. Grine will hand carry the samples. The samples will then be hand carried to Copenhagen. 
  4. The material may not be loaned to any person or institution other than Prof. Eske Willerslev at the Lundbeck Foundation Centre for GeoGenetics at the Natural History Museum of the University of Copenhagen and Prof. Fred Grine without the consent of SAHRA.
  5. The sampling of the hominin teeth are dependent on the positive results of the extraction of aDNA from the faunal samples as stipulated in the conditions of the permit issued by Heritage Western Cape and the conditions set out by the Iziko Museums of South Africa
  6. Tooth Casts must be made of the hominin specimens before sampling and all remaining specimens, sampled and unsampled, must be returned to South Africa by the end of December 2015. The cost of returning the material must be borne by Prof. Grine and Prof. Willerslev.
  7. SAHRA must be notified in writing of the return of the hominin samples, and a report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be lodged with SAHRA before the end of December 2015.
  8. Copies of all papers or publications resulting from this permit must be lodged with SAHRA.
  9. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.
  10. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holders.
