Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

Histological Sampling of Dinocephalian material

For sampling of the following 6 specimens from Iziko Museums of South Africa:

SAM-PK-K291, SAM-PK-8946, SAM-PK-11939, SAM-PK-11994, SAM-PK-12088, SAM-PK-12233

Dr Anusuya Chinsamy-Turan applied for a permit for destructive analysis of dinocephalian bone for bone histological analysis. Analysis will include sectioning or drilling (1 cm diameter) of specimens to extract samples of bone, which will be processed to thin sections. Specimens were selected due to their already incomplete and/or poorly preserved nature. Analysis will take place in Dr Chinsamy-Turan’s lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cape Town.

This permit is issued to Dr Anusuya Chinsamy-Turan, Professor at University of Cape Town, in collaboration with Dr Christen Shelton, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at University of Cape Town, to section and/or drill the selected representatives of dinocephalian fossil material as agreed by the curator Dr Roger Smith, Iziko Museums of South Africa. Selected specimens consist of the femur of a juvenile Anteosaurus (SAM-PK-K291), ulna of Keratocephalus moloch (SAM-PK-8946), bone fragments of Struthiocephalus (SAM-PK-11939), humerus of Jonkeria (SAM-PK-11994), associated bones of Anteosaurus (SAM-PK-12088) and bone fragments of Jonkeria parva (SAM-PK-12233) from the Middle Permian Karoo Supergroup (Tapinocephalus Assemblage Zone).

Conditions:

- Sampling may not reduce the structural integrity, overall completeness or the potential for future morphometric and descriptive research.

- A permit report on the activities of this permit is due on 31 August 2016.

- Reprints of all the published papers or copies of these and/or reports resulting from this work must be lodged with the heritage authority.

- SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries by or to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

- SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.
