Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

Export Permit application for micromorphological analysis of sediments from Knysna Eastern Heads Cave 1 (KEH Cave 1)

Conditions: 

For temporary export of the following 6 blocks of sediment samples excavated from from Knysna Heads Cave 1 (KEH-1), Western Cape Province: PF8374, 8636, 8408, 8802, 8808, 8811.

The samples are currently housed in Mossel Bay Archaeology Project facility in Mossel Bay, Western Cape Province. The exported material will be processed into thin sections at Spectrum Petrographics in Vancouver, Washington. A representative thin section of each of the 6 blocks will be returned to the remaining material at the Mossel Bay Archaeology Project facility. Thin sections will be analysed by Dr X.S. Villagran at Universidade de São Paulo in Brazil. The selected samples will be sent via courier (FedEx).

The permit is issued to Dr Thalassa Matthews (Natural History Department, Iziko Museums of Cape Town), in collaboration with Dr Naomi Cleghorn (University of Texas at Arlington) and Dr Ximena S. Villagran (Museu de Arqueologia e Etnologia, Universidade de São Paulo), to export 6 blocks of sedimentary samples from KEH-1.

Conditions:

1. Only the selected representatives of the material stored in the collection may be exported. The remaining material remains in the collections of the Mossel Bay Archaeology Project facility in Mossel Bay.

2. The material must be carefully packed and all packaging must be clearly marked with the name of the site (if known), and the name and address of the permit holder or the respective Museum, in which it is accessioned.

3. The material must be hand carried or air couriered.

4. Drs Naomi Cleghorn and Ximena S. Viallagran are responsible for the transport to and from the above mentioned facility.

5. Drs Naomi Cleghorn and Ximena S. Viallagran are responsible for the cost of the return of the material.

6. The specimens must be kept for study purposes only, and may not be sold or exchanged.

7. The material may not be loaned to any person or institution other than the above stated participants in the study, without the consent of SAHRA.

8 A report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be lodged with SAHRA before the 31 October 2016.

9. Copies of any papers that may result from the export of the material must be lodged with SAHRA.

10. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

11. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.

12. The material must be returned by the date the permit expires.
