Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

Export Permit of Stone Tools from Rose Cottage Cave for Residue Analysis

The permit is issued to Dr David Pearce (Rock Art Research Institute, School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies, University of the Witwatersrand), in collaboration with Ms Margaret-Ashley Veall (Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art, University of Oxford) and Dr Peter Mitchell (St. Hugh’s College, St. Margaret’s Road, Oxford OX2 6LE) for temporary export of 36 stone tool specimens from Rose Cottage Cave, Free State Province.

 

The samples are currently housed at the Department of Archaeology collections at the University of the Witwatersrand, Gauteng Province. The exported material will be analysed at Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art, Dyson Perrins Building, South Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3QY, United Kingdom by Ms. M-A. Veall. The analysis is not destructive. The material will be hand-carried to and from the United Kingdom by Dr. David Pearce and Ms. Margaret-Ashley Veall.

Conditions:

1. Only the selected representatives of the material stored in the collection may be exported. The remaining material remains at the Department of Archaeology collections at the University of the Witwatersrand.

2. The material must be carefully packed and all packaging must be clearly marked with the name of the site (if known), and the name and address of the permit holder or the respective institution, in which it is accessioned.

3. The material must be hand carried by Dr. David Pearce or Ms. Margaret-Ashley Veall.

4. Dr. David Pearce or Ms. Margaret-Ashley Veall are responsible for the transport to and from the above mentioned facility.

5. Ms. Margaret-Ashley Veall and Dr. Peter Mitchell are responsible for the cost of the return of the material.

6. The specimens must be kept for analysis purposes only, and may not be sold or exchanged.

7. The material may not be loaned to any person or institution other than the above stated participants in the study, without the consent of SAHRA.

8. A report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be lodged with SAHRA before the 30 November 2017.

9. Copies of any papers that may result from the export of the material must be lodged with SAHRA.

10. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

11. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.

12. The material must be returned by the date the permit expires.
