Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

Ancient DNA analysis of fossil ungulate remains from Pinnacle Point

Conditions: 

For export of 100 samples of ungulate fossils excavated from Pinnacle Point sites PP5-6, PP13B and PP30, Western Cape Province, currently stored at the Mossel Bay Archaeology Lab, for DNA analysis. Sampling will be done in South Africa by scraping off and/or slicing off a small amount from the specimen, and the sample will be exported to the US while the original specimen remains in South Africa. The samples will be destroyed in the sampling process.

The permit is issued to Dr Curtis Marean (Faculty of Science, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Port Elizabeth and Institute of Human Origins, School of Human Evolution and Social Change, Arizona State University), in collaboration with Dr. Anne Stone (School of Human Evolution and Social Change, Arizona State University) to export 100 samples of fossil ungulate specimens excavated at Pinnacle Point for DNA sampling in the Ancient DNA Laboratory at the School of Human Evolution and Social Change, Arizona State University. The host institution of the specimen is the Iziko South African Museum in Cape Town.

Conditions:

1. Only the selected representatives of the material stored in the collection may be exported.

2. The material must be carefully packed and all packaging must be clearly marked with the name of the site (if known), and the name and address of the permit holder or the respective institution, in which it is accessioned.

3. The material will be hand carried by Dr C. Marean.

4. Dr Curtis Marean is responsible for the transport to the above mentioned facility.

5. The specimen must be used for analysis purposes only, and may not be sold or exchanged.

6. The material may not be loaned to any person or institution other than the above stated participants in the study, without the consent of SAHRA.

7. A report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be lodged with SAHRA before the 30 November 2017.

8. Copies of any papers that may result from the export of the material must be lodged with SAHRA.

9. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

10. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.
