Histological and Palaeobiological Assessment of Dinocephalia

HeritageAuthority:

PermitID:

2131

PermitHolder:

PermitDate:

Tuesday, December 1, 2015 to Saturday, December 31, 2016

Activities:

Conditions:

For sampling of the following 8 specimens housed at the Evolutionary Studies Institute (ESI), University of the Witwatersrand (Wits):

BP/1/5591: femur, rib, radius, rib or fibula; BP/1/7168: scapula, rib; BP/1/7186: rib; BP/1/7380: humerus

Dr Christen Shelton applied for a permit to sample dinocephalian skeletal elements for bone histological analysis. The destructive analysis will include sectioning or drilling (1 cm diameter) of specimens to extract samples of bone, which will be processed to thin sections. Specimens were selected due to their already incomplete and/or poorly preserved nature. Analysis will take place in Dr Chinsamy-Turan’s lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cape Town.

This permit is issued to Dr Christen Shelton (Postdoctoral Research Fellow at University of Cape Town) to section and/or drill the selected representatives of dinocephalian fossil material as agreed by the curator Dr Bernhard Zipfel, ESI. Selected specimens consist of a femur, rib, radius and rib or fibula of Anteosaurus (BP/1/5591) from Rheboksfontein, Northern Cape;  scapula and rib of probably Titanosuchus (BP/1/7168) from Sutherland, Northern Cape; rib of a tapinocephalid from Sutherland, Northern Cape; and a humerus of a tapinocephalid (BP/1/7380) from Sutherland, Northern Cape.

Conditions:

- Sampling may not reduce the structural integrity, overall completeness or the potential for future morphometric and descriptive research.

- A permit report on the activities of this permit is due on 31 December 2017.

- Reprints of all the published papers or copies of these and/or reports resulting from this work must be lodged with the heritage authority.
